China Tests Satellite Internet in the Arctic

China has tested a satellite internet connection in the Arctic for the first time.

According to TASS, the test was a success. It was conducted along Arctic sea routes during the 16th Chinese Arctic Expedition, and the connection linked the Arctic, Antarctica, and the Tibetan Plateau.

The expedition, made up of the icebreakers Xuelong, Xuelong 2, and Polar and the research vessel Tansuo 3, departed from Dalian on July 3 and was expected to return in early October.

China Central Television (CCTV) described the Arctic as “the last blind spot on Earth,” which the satellite connection has now covered.

The voyage is China’s first Arctic expedition of the 15th Five-Year Plan. Its program covers sea ice, hydrology, biology, ecology, and the atmosphere in key areas of the Arctic Ocean, with scientists from Russia, Germany, and other countries taking part.
